Understanding Your Surroundings

First off I must state, This video is NOT for the Faint of Heart. Although it is not bloody, it is shocking. Its intention is to make you aware of the environment you ride in. This video is NOT from the US so we can take heart in that our streets and understanding of road courtesy are a bit better, but there are times that we all know it still doesn't help.

Some Things to Learn

So what is it we learn here from this video?

• We learn obviously that not all drivers pay attention. The car had a red light and never stopped.
• The motorcycle rider assumed that the intersection would be clear.
• Speed? Hard to tell, it looked a bit quick for the streets they were driving on, but it's something that you'll need to consider while riding.
• Riding gear is a plus. It looks like the guy has a helmet and heavy jacket on which obviously played a big factor here.

Thoughts

The overall amazement that I get out of this and accidents that I have seen personally is the violence of the forces at play. The motorcyclist is thrown some 10 to 15 feet into the air and spun like a top. The fact that he's moving at the end of the clip is amazing in itself!

I think that most of us feel that if we go down on a bike we will slide for a ways then come to a safe stop. This clip shows that the laws of science and physics have other ideas.

Conclusion

Pay attention, wear your riding gear, and whatever you do, don't think it can't happen to you!
